Illustrated with 37 engraved plates: 2 b/w maps, 1 large b/w four-fold map, 33 b/w, 1 colour. Additionally, this copy has a tipped-in engraved b/w portrait of Major Denham laid on the first flyleaf(v), with a singed and sealed (broken) letter from Denham addressed to Robert Porter written on watermarked paper bound opposite. Rebacked. Gilt decorations and rulings on spine and boards. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. 8 raised ribs; five compartments. Previous owner's signature (Harrley) on the top right of title page. Slightly foxed throughout, mostly to prelims and plates. Pages have the occasional stain/water mark, but are mostly clean and bright. Binding strong with a slight flare upwards on the upper board. Boards and spine worn, bumped and frayed in the corners, rubbed, and have some water stain marks (most notable on the lower board). Overall a strong volume that is easy to read and handle. Particularly rare to have mailed correspondence with the author bound into the book. Good. Item #68020
