The Migration of Symbols.

Printed in the UK. Archibald Constable and Co., 1894. First English edition. Cloth over boards. Hardcover cloth (green) over boards. 8vo. xxiii, [5], 277 pp. Illustrated with a b/w engraved plate frontispiece, five b/w engraved plates, and 164 b/w in text engraved figures. Gilt ornament of the footprints of Buddha stamped on the front board. Head darkened. Slight age toning. Text block is clean, unmarked (except for one instance of marginalia in the index), and square with a strong binding. Spine is missing, and the boards are worn/bumped.

This particularly copy seems to have been a research copy belonging to Edward Clodd (1840-1930), a banker, writer, and anthropologist based in the UK. Mr. Clodd's signature (as Edw. Clodd) is inscribed in the top right of the title page. The front and back matter are covered in pasted in newspaper articles and periodical pages. Additionally, there is a pasted in pamphlet and several loose inserts. It appears that Clodd himself was responsible for these additions; in several places are the initials E. C. inscribe on the pasted in articles. The pasted in pamphlet is entitled " The Swastika" written and published by H. Powell Rees (1908). Two of the loose inserts appear to be notes written by Edward Clodd. Additional biography note: Edward Clodd was the grandfather to Harold Alexander (Alan) Clodd (1918-2002), antiquarian bookseller and founder of Enitharmon Press.

Condition is as described; the exterior is rough, but the text block is fine. The main value of this volume comes from its provenance and additional material added by Edward Clodd.
