The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, in the County of Southampton. To which are added, The Naturalist's Calendar; Observations on Various Parts of Nature; and Poems.
Printed in the IK. White, Cochrane, and Co., 1813. New (third) edition. Cloth over boards. Hardcover 1/4 cloth (red) over bare boards with cloth d/j. 4to. x, [2], 587, [1] pp. Illustrated with a b/w engraved folding frontispiece, 7 b/w engraved plates, 1 hand-coloured engraved plate, and 3 b/w engraved vignettes. This copy has been re-cased with bare boards, 1/4 cloth spine, and a contemporary book cloth dustjacket. A brown leather label with gilt short title and author pasted on the spine appears to be from the original binding. Deckled edges with a partial cut head resulting in many pages being unable to open fully (unclear if this was intentional). Bookplate on the front pastedown reads: "Charles Henry Turner." An ink inscription on the front flyleaf reads: "Then, who can read, without the most exquisite delight, White's History of Selborne? It is indeed a Sabbath Book, worthy a whole Library of Sermons, nine-tenths of the Bampton Lectures included, and will make a Deist of an Atheist, of a Deist a Christian. Blackwood: (illegible, possibly Mag) June 1828 p 872." Reference is to Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine Vol. XIII January-June 1828 by William Blackwood in an article on Wilson's Illustrations of Zoology. Unknown hand. Text block mostly clean and unmarked; there is occasional foxing predominately around the plates. Contemporary loose sheets have been added as guards over the plates to prevent further foxing (added at an unknown time). The folding frontispiece has been repaired (unknown when) with clear tape which has browned. The spine, boards, and d/j are worn/frayed around the edges. Boards are slightly soiled. An interesting copy that has clearly been used but still has uncut pages. The binding appears rough, but it is strong and square, and the book is easy to open and read. Care has been put in to keeping this copy repaired. Overall condition is good on this charming book.
