Pagination: volume I - xvii, 385 pp; volume II - xi, 395 pp. Illustrations: volume I - a b/w engraved frontispiece portrait of James Brooke, 7 b/w wood engraved plates, a b/w lithograph plate, 2 b/w engraved fold-out maps, and 1 hand coloured engraved fold-out map; volume II - a b/w engraved frontispiece, 4 b/w wood engraved plates, 4 b/w lithograph plates, and 2 b/w engraved fold-out maps. Trimmed and rebound. Uniform binding. Six compartment spines with five raised ribs. Brown leather label with gilt stamped title pasted into compartment two. Speckled edges. Bookseller's sticker from Henry March Gilbert & Son, Southampton, in the upper left corner of the front pastedowns. Inscription on the front flyleaf reads" Read in the fall of 1905." Inscription at the bottom of the frontispiece of vol. I (illegible). Partially trimmed inscriptions at the top of each title page. Library stamps from "Sydney Public Library" on both pastedowns of each volume. Ownership stamp reading "A. J. Moxham" on the front flyleaf of both volumes. Text blocks have darkened heads, and light foxing around the lithographs and frontispieces. Pages are generally bright and clean. Maps are whole and undamaged. Bindings are strong and square. The boards and spines of both volumes are rubbed and bumped. Edges and hinges are worn. Spines slightly sunned with small stains. The marbled paper is worn white in sections of the front and back. Despite its exterior, the books are easy to handle, with no flaking or cracking, and there is plenty of use left in their bindings. A good set of copies overall. Good. Item #67273
