Hardcover 3/4 leather (brown) over paper (marbled) over boards. 4to. xi, 1084 pp. Illustrated with 882 b/w wood engraved plates (signatures, portraits, landscapes, and maps), a full colour engraved frontispiece, and an engraved title page. Second printing of the 1968 first edition. Six compartment spine with five raised ribs decorated with gilt stamped ornaments, short title, and author. Gilt rulings on the front and back boards. Marbled edges and endpapers. Text block has very slight browning to the edges but the pages are predominately bright and clean. Small waterstain in the bottom of the gutter of the prelims. The marbled paper on the boards is worn white in places and worn through on the edges. The spine is marked and worn. Bumped and frayed corners. Some of the marbling on the foot has been worn off. This book has seen a lot of use but is in surprisingly good condition given the rough exterior. A good copy overall. Good. Item #67266
