Illustrated with 28 b/w fine engraved plates, a b/w frontispiece, and numerous b/w engraved drawings in-text. A publisher's agent copy meant for demonstration and direct sales to the public. This copy includes swatches of three different binding material (English cloth, Arabesque leather, and Antique Morocco leather) pasted on the front and back pastedowns and flyleaves, a publisher's contract guaranteeing that the final product will only be available by subscription, and an unused 30 page customer order list. Front boards and spine leather, back board cloth. Gilt title and illustration of a family at table stamped on the front and back. Text block shows some minor brown marks, but is otherwise clean, unmarked and square with a strong binding. The boards and spine are rubbed, worn along the edges, and have bumped corners. Small crack at the top of the front hinge. Small hole in the bottom back hinge. A rare find; demonstration books like this were not often kept past the final print run of the completed copy.
