Round laurel border with Latin text interior (Praemium ingenii artibus liberalibus feliciter dediti in academia glasguensi -- Prize for talent devoted to the liberal arts at Glasgow Academy ) stamped in gilt on front board. Red leather label with gilt half title pasted on spine. Gilt stamped ornaments on spine. Single line gilt border on front and back boards. Marbled text block edges. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate on front pastedown from Glasgow Academy states this copy was awarded as second prize to John Caldwell for arithmetic 1877-8. Inscriptions on the front fly leaves in graphite. Text block edges darkened slightly, and there is very minor foxing throughout the body. Binding is strong and square. Boards and spine have been rubbed, with the patina along the head and spine completely rubbed off. Board edges shellfworn with bumped corners. Water stain on front and back boards. Overall a strong little book, despite some blemishes. Good. Item #67158
