A ten part series originally published in The Strand magazine in 1898 under the pen name L. T Meade (Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith). Gilt stamped title on front board and spine. Gilt stamped illustration of a man with a noose around his neck on a raft in a cave. Inscription on front flyleaf. Text block is slightly browned with occasional fox marks. The binding is strong and square; the other 12 plates are securely glued in. The boards are worn and bumped along the edges and corners, are lightly rubbed, and has a white speckle stain on the spine and back board. Good. Item #67116
