Includes a catalogue of books published by Henry S. King & Co. after the main text. English text. Inscribed, dated (September 1873), and signed by the author on the half title page. A second inscription on the back pastedown reads: "Inscribed presentation copy with portrait of the author." Text block is clean, with the occasional foxing mark, but slightly askew. Edges are discoloured. Small enclosed tear in the last page of the catalogue. Front and back boards broken into four compartments with black stamped lines. Title stamped in black over gilt vines in second compartment of front cover, with two ornaments of leaves, and one of cattails stamped in black in compartments one and three, and the author's name in gilt stamped in compartment 3. Gilt title stamped on spine with more gilt vines. Publisher's monogram stamped in black on back cover. Boards are worn and frayed along the edges. Corners of the boards are exposed. The cloth at the top and bottom of the spine has been worn down. Binding is tender, and should be treated gently. Fair. Item #67016
