Hardcover original cloth (blue) over boards. 4to. viii + 315 pp. Illustrated with 51 b/w plate photographs and diagrams, a folding b/w photograph frontispiece, and a large, removable, quarter-folded, three colour map depicting the Antarctic Circle. Canadian issue printed simultaneously with the UK version from the same sheets. Translated from the original French into English by Philip Walsh. Front cover stamped with a blind double border, gilt title, and gilt illustration depicting a sailing ship. Gilt title stamped on the spine, along with a white stamped illustration of a penguin. Deckled fore edge. Light foxing throughout the text block, most noticeable on the title page, as well as some browning to the edges. Moderate shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine, and along the edges of the boards. Spine has been sunned. Image of the penguin has been rubbed. Text block is square and the binding is strong. No inscriptions or ownership marks. Good. Item #66982
